Admin: Questions For Authors

Fellow authors, I have a few questions/comments for you regarding how this blog is run and thought it would be easier to write an “admin post” than to send mass email. Apologies to readers—we shall return to our regularly scheduled programming shortly.

  1. Would you like me to set up an email distribution list containing all the authors' addresses for future group communications, or is everyone happy with using occasional admin posts for that?

  2. Blogger has a feature which sends all comments made on this blog (regardless of who authored the post) to individual email addresses. I am happy to set this up for anyone who would like to receive comments by email. The only problem is that Blogger limits this to 10 email addresses, and there are already more than 10 of us. Let me know if you’re interested in this, and if necessary, I can look into creating an alias or setting up a specific email account for this that we can all access.

  3. Please use labels on your posts to make it easier for readers to find posts by topic. And at the rate we’re going, it’ll help us find specific posts too! My suggestion is to label your posts with your field of training and the alternative careers and/or topics you are discussing. I’ve also toyed with the idea of labeling posts with the author's pseudonym so one can search for posts by author. What do you think about that?

  4. I’m considering creating a “Topic of the Week” on the sidebar that will contain a suggested topic for everyone to weigh in on. For example, CAE and I have been discussing writing a series of posts on networking, which is a topic some of you may also wish to write about. Anyone can suggest a topic and, of course, nobody will be required to post on the topic. Thoughts on this?

  5. I’ll set up a “Resources” list in the sidebar to house all the useful websites you have recommended. Might take me a few days, but feel free to post or email me links you would like included.

Thanks for all your great posts!

Admin posts are fine with me. And I prefer to ask Blogger to send me comments only on the topics I want to see comments on, so a mass email wouldn't be something I'd be interested in (but that's just me).

A topic of the week would be great.

I'd actually prefer an email list to admin posts, because if we organise "who's writing what" in the comments of a post, everyone will see it and it will pre-empt the actual posts a bit too much.

I'd be OK with seeing all comments - I like to see comments on my own posts so I can respond to them, but I'm too lazy to subscribe to each comment post individually!

I've been tagging my posts by subject but I think it's a great idea to tag by author too. Do you want me to go back and add the tag myself?

Love the topic of the week and resources ideas!

1) Admin posts are fine with me.

2) I prefer to not have comments e-mail to me--the way this site has taken off, I fear being completely overwhelmed!

3)I think labeling by author pseudonym as well as by topic might be useful. I'll do both.

4)"Topic of the Week" is a great idea!

5) "Resources list" is also an excellent idea. I have a bunch of sites I can e-mail you!

1) Admin posts are fine with me too.

2) I prefer to read the comments on the blog as I don't check my email as often as I should. ;-)

3) Great idea. I will go back and put that on mine--the handle of the author that is.

4)topic of the week sounds great.

5)Resource lists is a great idea.

6) Glad someone is thinking of these ideas. I am brain dead right now.

7) Sorry for the multiple posts. I am having problems with that on all blogs lately.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'll work on setting up the "topics" and "resources" lists.

CAE, I've set up your email to receive comments. And if you don't mind adding the tag, that'd be great. Thanks!

Bean-Mom, more links to resources would be great. We can never have too many, right?

Thanks Mad Hatter for doing this. It can be quite time consuming. We appreciate it.

You're welcome!

1) I 'd prefer email list than admin post: it's less confusing for the readers

2) I'm fine with the comments as they are right now. Getting all the comments on my mailbox would saturate it (I'm an email freak: during certain periods I'm continuously checking if I have new emails). The ideal would be to receive a daily digest of all the new comments. But only if this is simple to set for you.

3) Tags by authors is a good idea. It would be nice to have more predefined tags too. I know that, in the long term, we will have a long enough list but if someone has already some ideas to frame this all, that would be nice.

4) A topic of the week is an excellent idea. A resource list too.

The number and quality of posts and comments are really good. It proves that your initiative is a great one!
But I think that rapidly this blog will need more structure (I mean, in the presentation) to make it easier to read/navigate.

Thanks mate!

Pablo--These are great suggestions, and I completely agree that more structure in the way the blog is set up would be helpful. Unfortunately, Blogger doesn't have many of the functionalities that would be useful--ability to have multiple "tabs", organizing post labels by category, etc. I don't think there's any way to generate daily digests of new comments either.

Of course, it's possible that someone with programming skills could alter the Blogger template to generate these functions, but given that I can only program in Basic, that person is not me! Anyway, I'll try to come up with a few low-tech ways to improve the organization, particularly with the labels.

1. Totally cool with me :)

2. I'll try out the auto email of comments - i go through busy phases where i lose track of ALL my net responsibilities. Being reminded would kickstart me.

3. I'll follow the consensus on this one.

4. Again, anything to light fires under my posterior is a good thing.

5. I rarely follow links from a blog, except occasionally when the primary article is not excerpted or summaried. I like to focus on what i'm reading - the blog - and not get distracted with a million other things. But i know i'm weird ;)

Yttrai--I've set up you to receive comments by email. Thanks for the feedback!
